I make a great old-fashioned. Add one tablespoon simple syrup to a rocks glass, and stir in two generous shakes of Angostura bitters. Pour two and one-half ounces of quality rye whiskey (think Bulleit or Templeton), add a large ice cube (no machine ice), and a lemon twist.
You may encounter an old-fashioned with cherries, muddled fruit, or other nonsense. Don't be fooled. That's a different drink and not worthy of the name.
Notice the large ice-cube to the right. A slow melting large cube makes for a robust – yet easy drinking – cocktail.
